BC 211 Initiative

The goal of the BC 211 Initiative is to develop a province–wide, free, and confidential information and referral service that is effective, efficient, and sustainable.

211 is an easy-to-remember three-digit phone number and website providing free, confidential, multilingual access to information about the full range of community, social, health and government services. Just as 911 now means access to emergency services, 211 is the pathway to these non-emergency services.

The purpose of this site is to provide information about the process of establishing a 211 service in this province so that all British Columbians can connect rapidly and easily to the services and support they need in their community.

Stakeholder Engagement Sessions
By jackv - 7/19/2006

In addition to comprehensive information & referral, 211 centres across North America are used to provide other types of assistance.  For example, in Los Angeles, 211 provides information regarding emergency cold weather shelter availability.  In Atlanta, 211 also enables callers to find volunteering opportunities and ways to donate household and office items. To better understand the needs of BC’s service providers and to discuss opportunities, the Steering Committee has invited individuals from stakeholder groups from across the province to a number of facilitated sessions.  These sessions are part of an ongoing dialogue between BC 211and stakeholders about how BC’s 211 service can best serve the needs of our citizens.

Data collection
By jackv - 7/19/2006

A province-wide 211 service will provide up-to-date information about services and programs in communities across BC.   Via telephone or internet, people will be able to locate the resources and services they need quickly and easily.  A current and accurate database is therefore critical to ensuring that the BC 211 service meets the needs of service providers and the public. To achieve that goal, the Project Team, lead by IBM, is currently working on the defining and designing the data collection requirements, tools and processes.
